It’s that time of year where nerds unite under one large convention center in San Diego, to attend panels and idolize pop culture gods, to ogle booth babes throughout the main floor, and to meet others just like you and just feel like you’re home.
I’m talking about the San Diego Comic Con. The 2011 Comic Con will be from Thursday, June 21 through Sunday, June 24. There is an extensive schedule of panels, autograph sessions, and events to make you turn from a closet geek into a loud and proud one.
I myself am excited since this will be my first year. And what am I excited to see the most? The book publishers of course! Well, there is this little cartoon called the Thundercats, but you may not have heard of it…Okay, maybe you have, but that’s for another post all together. Yes! I am excited for the publishers that will be at Comic Con. Since I was not able to attend BEA or ALA this year, I am going to make the best of both worlds (of my geekiness) and fully embrace all that Comic Con has to offer.
This year I am glad to say that several of my favorite publishers will be there. Let’s go through them one by one, shall we? I’ll talk about them by the date of their panel. Just easier that way and there won’t be any specific order.
- First up is The Penguin Group (USA). This includes Penguin, Penguin Young Readers, ACE, Berkley, Signet, NAL, and ROC.
Firiday’s panel will showcase the dish on the upcoming books from authors Jim Butcher, Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, S.M. Stirling, Rachel Caine, Heather Brewer, Richelle Mead, Kathy Reichs, John Flanagan, and many more. It is promised that there will be free advance reading copies!
Books that I am looking forward to see (or get advanced copies of) are Marie Lu’s Legend, Kelley Armstrong’s Spell Bound, and Rachel Caine’s The Morganville Vampires, Vol. 4.
Aside from the panel, they have a booth where I am sure there will be posters, giveaways, and other cool things to take home and enjoy.
- Next up is HarperCollins Publishers. This includes HarperTeen! Tons of amazing books to expect from HarperCollins.
On Friday there is a How-To panel around the “Badass” book series illustrated by Matt Haley. On Saturday, the amazing editors at Harper talk about epic fantasy, urban fantasy, and military sci-fi. They will also talk about the upcoming releases at Harper Voyager (Eos Books), home of Raymond Feist and Robin Hobb. Don’t miss out because the yummy Avon Books will showcase titles from Chris Moore, Neil Gaiman, Joe Hill, Neal Stphenson, Guillermo Del Toro, Lynsay Sands, and Jeaniene Frost. Harper is going to include slipstream and noir UF punk from the likes of Richard Kadrey and Brom.
Books I’m excited about? So many to list, but some are Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi, Supernaturally by Kiersten White, Vanish by Sophie Jordan, The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore, The Girl of Fire & Thorns by Rae Carson, and Eve by Anna Carey.
- I won’t be able to see Simon & Schuster on Thursday, but, there will be great things in this panel also.
Thursday will have The Scoop at Simon & Schuster. There, they will showcase the upcoming books and give a chance to win some prizes. The marketing gurus will give us the scoop on upcoming books from authors, including Cassandra Clare, Scott Westerfeld, Orson Scott Card, and Becca Fitzpatrick. There’s also a chance to win exclusive giveaways AND all attendees will receive a limited edition t-shirt for Cassandra Clare’s Clockwork Prince.
On Sunday, there is a panel dedicated to What’s Hot in Young Adult Fiction. It will be a sit down with writer’s we cannot stop talking about. Hosted by Nathan Bransford, the panel will feature Andrea Cremer, Amanda HOcking, Tahereh Mafi, Stephanie Perkins, Laini Taylor, and Kiersten White. They will discuss the YA phenomenon and their books.
Of course, there will be other publishers there who will have booths. Disney Publishing doesn’t have a panel, but I am really looking forward to visiting their booth. Amazing authors always come from DPW, so I can’t wait to see who they will be showcasing this year.
The booths that I will most likely visit, will be:
- Disney Publishing Worldwide/DisneyHyperion
- HarperCollins Publishers
- Hatchette Book Group
- Mysterious Galaxy
- Penguin Group USA
- Penguin Young Readers
- Random House
- Simon & Schuster
